Emerson is home to many schools, departments, offices, programs, centers, and initiatives, each with its own role and identity within the College. Our unit lockup system provides a consistent way to represent these areas while keeping their connection to Emerson clear.
Unit lockups pair the Emerson College identity with the name of an individual unit, creating a flexible and recognizable system across the College. Using these lockups consistently helps strengthen the Emerson brand while giving each area the space to clearly identify itself.
Unit lockups are the official identifiers for Emerson schools, departments, offices, programs, centers, and other recognized College units. Creating logos or other identifying marks outside of the approved unit lockup system is prohibited.

Using Unit Lockups
Always use the approved unit lockup artwork provided by Emerson. Do not recreate, typeset, rearrange, or modify the elements of a unit lockup.
Choose the configuration that works best for the available space and layout, and always scale the complete lockup proportionally.
Keep in mind:
- Use approved unit lockup files rather than creating your own.
- Do not change the typeface, proportions, spacing, or arrangement.
- Do not separate the unit name from the Emerson College identity within the lockup.
- Maintain adequate clear space around the entire lockup.
- Select a version that provides strong contrast and legibility against its background.
- Do not place the lockup over busy photography or backgrounds that compromise legibility.

Endorsed Marks
In some cases, a center, institute, initiative, program, or other Emerson entity may have a demonstrated need for a more distinct visual identity beyond the standard unit lockup system. In these instances, an endorsed mark may be considered.
Endorsed marks allow for greater visual distinction while maintaining a clear connection to Emerson College. They are exceptions to our standard identity system and are developed in collaboration with the Office of Marketing and Communications.
Our endorsed mark system is continuing to evolve following the launch of Emerson’s new brand. New marks will be considered on a case-by-case basis by the Office of Marketing & Communications, with additional guidance and examples added here as they are developed.
